BBC NEWS SCHOOL REPORT
BBC NEWS SCHOOL REPORT---4 students of 'The Millennium School', Mohali have taken part in a BBC News School Report Project in which they were meant to highlight some local problem, interview people about it and give a report. Following is the report compiled by Mahima (class VIII), Kshitija (class VII), Riya (class VII), Anhad (class VI):
Cattle Menace In Mohali Punjab
Cattle menace dots Mohali roads , posing a great danger to the life of commuters . No day passes when there is no such news in the newspaper about fatal accidents taking place due to cattle . Any given day the cattle can be seen sitting or roaming on the busy roads and public parks .
In fact , they are left to roam about by their owners. “These cattle are like cars standing in the middle of the road causing traffic jams “, said Sqn Ldr Amarjit Singh, one of the residents of Mohali . You can’t walk ten yards without bumping into a cow. Who is to be blamed for this ? Actually, the cattle owners release their cattle after milking them to graze and they are found spoiling the roads , public parks and even seen sitting near the residential areas . The Mohali Municipal Committee official when contacted said that there is no Act/Law to take care of the menace posed by cattle but the committee has passed a resolution where the MC staff lifts the cattle off the street and shifts them to the cattle pound in Industrial Area,Mohali . The cattle owner is fined Rs. 1000 for a grown up cattle and Rs.500 for a calf and then it is released and those left without owner are shifted to the gaushalas in Mohali . They also informed that the money earned from the fine is used to provide fodder to the cattle . Inspite of the of the best effort of the Municipal Committee the cattle owners are not learning a lesson .We interviewed some of the residents of Mohali to know the solution of this problem. The problem would be solved completely only when the local cattle owners are shifted to some new sites away from the town area, they said . It seems the residents of Mohali will breathe a sigh of relief only when the authorities take some remedial steps to curb cattle menace .

Grandparents part of the Library Week
The Library Week, apart from a story writing competition and a book-mark making competition, had an interesting feature added to it---story telling by grandparents. Six grandparents of students of classes I & II volunteered to visit the Library and relate stories to the students of the class of their grandchildren. The grandparents came fully equipped with props, songs, poems, and an interesting story which delighted all the students attending the session. The wonderful response of the students could be seen by the answers they gave to the ‘Q/A’ session post the story telling session. The tastefully and appropriately decorated library added to the atmosphere created for the Library Week.

As member of the ‘Global School Partnerships Programme’, ‘The Millennium School’, Mohali is partners with ‘Little Sutton Primary School’, Birmingham, UK. Each of the partner schools has undertaken some projects centered on global dimensions and interspersed them into the school curriculum. One of the activities undertaken is a mutual visit by one or two teachers to schools in both countries. Rita, the Lead Coordinator from Little Sutton has been in India, visiting ‘The Millennium School’, Mohali from November 12, 2011. She has been a part of the system, attending and conducting classes, story telling sessions, art, music, and dance lessons. She has spent a considerable time with the IT department to learn how technology is being made use of in the school curriculum and for administrative purposes, including compilation of the school result at all levels. Having been to some other Indian schools as well, she has declared that she’s found ‘The Millennium School’, to be a very modern school, while at the same time not losing its focus on the value system which is such a beautiful part of the Indian Culture.

Children's Day Celebrations
Children’s Day was celebrated in a unique style at ‘The Millennium School’, Mohali. Firstly, a KBC style quiz contest was organised for all level of students from classes I to X. From each level two students’ names were pulled out of a box and the pair sat on the ‘hot seat’ and was asked 10 questions relevant to their age level. Three life lines were given to the students---50/50, ask a friend, flip the question. The pair could discuss the answer before ‘locking’ it. For each correct answer, students were given prizes. If an answer was wrong, the pair was eliminated. If the pair had answered less than 10 questions, the names of another pair were pulled out from the same class and this went on till the 10 questions had been answered. The children really enjoyed this format of quiz competition.
After the quiz contest, a 45 minutes show was put up by the staff which included the rendering of a ‘shabad’, a group song in English, a semi-classical dance by two teachers, and then a performance of ‘sami’ by 20 teachers.
On the whole it turned out to be a day of fun ‘n frolic and a unique experience for the children. The Global Schools’ Partnership team which is here from the UK also attended the show and applauded the effort put up by the teachers.

Blue Ocean Dialogue
Blue Ocean’ is a term used to refer to clean, pristine market spaces. These are areas in an industry where customers exist but there are extremely limited or no competitors. Blue Oceans emerge because of new needs, new consumer groups, changed habits, new product development, etc.
In the context of the workshop, a Blue Ocean referred to “New Ideas” – innovations that have never been thought of before.
On the first day of the workshop, the members of the YI discussed with the students what the workshop was all about and encouraged them to come up with new, innovative ideas.
On the second day of the Blue Ocean Dialogue, various groups presented their charts, which captured their ideas of the innovations being proposed. The teams very strongly defended the innovation being proposed by them and predicted the likely developmental impact on a sector. The Blood Savers Group won the first prize for proposing a machine which could convert blood types to match the one required by a patient; the Catalysts Group won the second prize for proposing a machine that could clean roads independently and on it own.

'Health for all' should not be an empty slogan. In this age when diseases and accidents destroy so many lives, health professionals try to save as many as they can. For all these humanitarian endeavours blood and its components are a critical necessity. On August 24, 2011, Mrs. Daman Duggal and Mrs. Popli from the Rotary Blood Bank Society visited the school and enlightened the students on the importance of Blood Donation. Ofcourse, children below the age of 18 cannot donate blood but they can persuade their parents and relatives to do so. I Day Celebrations
The Dance & Music Departments put up an enthralling show to mark the 64th I-day of the country. Scintillating performances were given by students in both dance and music. A fusion dance, a western number, patriotic songs, a special performance by the special children, all formed part of the celebrations. A ballet on the partition of India brought tears to everyone's eyes. The amazing show ended with a rock version of 'hum honge kamyab' which had everyone singing along and tapping their feet.
